Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 25 Feb 2006 15:52

Ihave several members of my family with the same middle name, both males and females, but cannot work out why. eg Joseph Thorbon Elmer Martha Thorbon Elmer Rebbecca Thorbon Elmer Parents were George Elmer and Elizabeth ? I cant find the marriage at the moment to get Elizabeth's maiden name,it could be any time from 1843ish to around 1850. I just can't find any reference to the name elsewhere, but wondered why it seems so important. Maybe it's just a Norfolk thing?

I have had the same in my birth father's family. The middle name Mosson or Mossen has gone down the generations as far back as we have traced, to the early 1800s. The family came from Ireland originally. We can only assume Mosson was a maiden name from an ancestral marriage, but we have not found it yet. Frustrating isn't it? Liz x

I have something similar in my tree and it turned out to be the mothers maiden name

All I can find at the moment is a marriage - George Elmer to Elizabeth Curtis - Dec Q. 1840 - Aylesham 13 16. Don't know yet where the other name comes in. Dea x

Yeah i was thinking along the maiden names line, just seems that 99.9% of the Elmers where born in about 2 square miles and they all used George,Sarah,Elizabeth and William. Have so far found 18 George and Elizabeth marriages in the 3 years before the probable eldest child. AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH Not including the above one Dea has found.

Glen - I would say your best bet is to get the birth certificate of one of the children, as it will give the mother's maiden name. Kate.

Been sat waiting on one for nearly three weeks, keep mugging the postman as the estimated date was last tuesday. Oh well i suppose they won't run away. The worst thing is they moved about a bit and three places they lived in i've been to this week in the truck, but only just found out today. Drat and double drat.

Montmorency Report 25 Feb 2006 19:07

looks like one of those 'does my tum look big in this' weddings: 1851 Jan-Mar Elmer, George, Mitford 13 355 Harrison, Elizabeth Martha, Mitford 13 355 There aren't that many George Elmer weddings really. And Elizabeth is at her mum's in the 1851 census, mum being Rebecca Harrison. ps - I realise now, Elizabeth is at home in 1851, it's George who's escaped

I have a gt gt gt grandfather called Emmets. I was fairly certain it would be his mother's maiden name so was disappointed when her name turned out to be Crossley. His father, though had a mother called Anne Emmets! nell

Thanks Robin, that was one i couldn't find from the female side and free bmd only had the index under George. Certainly looks likely with the Mitford references in the census as i follow the family round the country. Thanks again
