I'm pretty sure a death WOULD be registered. I know births sometimes weren't but I would have thought a death would have to be registered before a burial could take place. Maybe the death took place somewhere you would not expect it to (i.e. if the person was visiting somewhere away from where they usually lived). Kath. x

Hello Kathleen I was told once that just the doctors confirmation of death was enough for the undertaker to go ahead with burial. Penny where was your mother from Margaret

Margaret - I only know that when my mother and mother-in-law both died, although we had the medical death certificate from the doctor, we had to go to the register office to get the official death certificate before we could go to the undertakers to arrange the funeral. Kath. x

Yes Kathleen I know that from the deaths I have registered myself and I am talking about 1888-1891, and that information was told to me on this site perhaps it was different then, All I know is I have searched till I am blue in the face and even had a search done at the local office to where he lived, he could possibly have died elsewhere but not knowing his true age it is very hard. There was even a mix up on his marriage certificate all seems par for the course on that side of the family. thanks Margaret

After 1875 there was a legal obligation to register births and deaths (before that you didn't have to!) After 1875, for a birth, you would be fined if you ''forgot to register'' and of course once you had been found out, yyou would have to register too. I had assumed that for deaths, once you were legally obliged to register, then it would be like today, where the undertaker needs to see the death cert before a burial/cremation can take place. But I don't actually KNOW that......could a death registration slip through the net after 1875?? I DO KNOW that some registrations don't reach the GRO indexes, so maybe that is the problem with Margaret's? Merry
