I am looking for the ancestors of my GGFx3 William Castledine Wyles born 1802 Burg Le Marsh, Lincoln. I have that reference which Geoff kindly confirmed in Lincoln for me. Shows dad Benjamin Wiles, mum Mary. I find a marriage in 1799 in Woolsthorpe Lincs between a Ben Wiles of Kings Cliffe, Northants and a Mary Castledine. Yes, I can hear you all say but I am unable to tie my William Wyles in with them. William is in London and marries 1831 to Catherine Alford - they have Mary Ann in 1832 and she is my direct ancestor. William shown as William Wyles, cabinet maker. In the 1841 he is an upholsterer as is his wife In the 1851 he is a letter carrier, but the rest of the family are upholsters. In 1853 his daughter Mary Ann marries my GGFx2 James Hanson, a cabinet maker (all ties in nicely doesnt it, cabinet makers and upholsterers everywhere). On this marriage cert William is shown as William Castledine Wyles, letter sorter. 1861 wife is a widow. Have sent for a death cert, which may be him 1858 Whitechapel. Now, there is another family of Wyles, headed by a Daniel Wyles born 1808 Kings Cliffe Northants. He is on every census, living down the road a way from William and he and his son James are working for the GPO as letter sorters. He has a nephew living with them in 1851 who is ..........a carpenters apprentice. Am I right in thinking these two lots must be connected or am I clutching at straws. |

I really really don't want to post this, as I may get my invite to the Kew party cancelled, but................ The Benjamin Wyles from Kings Cliffe might have taken his wife Mary Castledine, home with him after the marriage? If he did, then isn't it likely that THIS is THEIR son, William (ie not your William Castledine Wyles) WILLIAM WYLES Birth: Christening: 06 JUL 1800 Kings Cliffe, Northampton, England Parents: Father: BENJAMIN WYLES Family Mother: MARY Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for locality listed in the record. Please tell me I have the wrong end of the proverbial stick?? Merry *waits to be bashed over head and invite ripped up* |

Exactly - thats what I am so flummoxed about, there would be two ******** Bens and Marys around same time in Northants. But where would my guy get that middle name from if he isnt their kiddie? UNLESS, this was their first shot at a William and then Mum went home to her mum for the next one?? |

See what I mean about proper brick walls, Merry? There is another family with a Ben and Mary in Ufford Northants, - ideal occupation, all carpenters. But again, no connection to a William born in Lincs!! Oh, right, I think Im gonna dump this lot for a while, Im wasting precious eating time worrying about them. Thanks Merry, I needed to get it down on paper to see it myself. I am beginning to think there is a definite connection between these two families but what, I really cant work out, and I mean way back, not just the lots in London. Take 5 guys! Definitely still on the list for Kew - when son goes there they pick them up in a little train thing from the carpark and take them round the gardens - we will book that too. |

Where did geoff get the middle name from?? It's not on the extracted baptism?? WM. WILES Birth: Christening: 07 OCT 1802 Burgh-Le-Marsh, Lincoln, England Parents: Father: BENJAMIN WILES Mother: MARY Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. Could the Kings Cliffe child have died and this is their next one, having moved house?? Merry |

Hi, he uses it only once - on his daughters marriage certificate. But the date of birth and the place is shown on census, exact. |

Heather, Any ideas about Ben's occupation and if it involved travel - have had a look on the map. Kings Cliffe near Stamford, Woolsthorpe near Grantham and Burgh le Marsh near Skegness. Then your William turns up in London. I'm wondering if Ben was some kind of carpenter - making coaches or furniture - and travelled around. Jay |

This is the pain. Ben Wiles with wife Mary in Ufford is a carpenter (remember my William was a cabinet maker turned upholsterer, turned letter sorter). The family of Daniel Wyles in Shoreditch near William and family has Daniel and son as letter sorters and a nephew, also Dan as a carpenter. There is another family with a Ben as head in North London - from Northants, a carpenter, he is at a school with a governess as wife and a daugher who is a pupil teacher. (He would be about right age to be Williams nephew or a much younger, by 20 years bro). However that lot are from Ufford not Kings Cliffe. I had tried to tie that Ufford lot in by finding more baptisms in same place as my William, but Geoff says there arent any. His brother, George is found as a lodger on a couple of census - occupation carpenter/visitor. So they must have done a good trade in whatever carpentry they were doing! In Huntingdon 1841 there is a Benjamin Wyles, widower born Kings Cliffe, right age to be father of my William but he is a brewers clerk. So a real tangled mess. We have two Ben and Marys. Then we have a Ben and Mary in Ufford with sons all carpenters and Ben one too. We have Ben in Huntingdon, but born Kings Cliffe who is a brewers clerk. |

OK I get that about the 1802 baptism - no middle name, but def your guy. Now, this marriage Wyles to Castledine. Is it in the PR's that it says Benjamin is ''of Kings Cliffe''?? (sorry to ask simpleton Q's, but it helps me to remember everything!! Merry |

yep Dont worry Merry, leave it for a while, Im sure you got more important stuff and NOW the old man is home - damn trip wire didnt work again - we will have to send them back to Argos girl. xxx Ive just been trawling Pallots for Wyles - there is a Sarah and a Tom getting married in Bermondsey round same time as William married Catherine Alford. Shall think on that. Bye. |
