Dear All, Well this is a little bit of fun for any of you who’ve got a spare moment or two and who like a challenge (and it’d do me a favour too!)… My friend Liz’s Dad passed away in November and she’s now trying to find out information about her Grandparents on her Dad’s side. The information I have is that her grandmother was called Gwendoline Constance Newton We think DOB: 5th Jan 1892 Year of Death: 1935/6 ?Fulham (she died of pneumonia) She Married Francis Victor Wallington DOB Unknown, Year of Death circa 1969. They lived in London and in Abingdon (Oxfordshire). (They had a son Dennis and a daughter and another son I think.) Francis was Catholic and Gwendoline was Protestant and his parents never acknowledged the marriage as binding as they were very strong Catholics. They also had no connection with the Grandchildren as they saw them as illegitimate children. So can anybody help? I haven’t worked out censuses properly yet and I’ve looked briefly on BMD and Genes and Liz has tried Ancestry I think but you all have a lot more wisdom and experience than me so if you can think of any bright ideas it’d be very well received! Thanks for your time and effort and happy hunting! Abi |

Do you know when Gwendoline and Francis married? Obtainng their marriage certificate would give both fathers, and Francis's age which will help pinpoint them on the censuses. Liz |

Thanks - sounds like it could be a possible - are there middle names? We came across a lot of Gendoline Mary's before when I was looking with Liz but no Gwen Constance's! Sorry and don't know when they married but their son was about 14 when his mother died so it must have been before then...does that help?? Abi |

we're probably best to start at the beginning to confirm mother s maiden name - so do you have name and date of birth for your friends father? If we look for the birth refernce it will give us confirmation of moters maiden name so we can at least see if you're along the right lines with Gwendoline |

Here's their marriage: Wallington Francis V Newton Gwendoline C Lambeth. Vol 1d Page 605 Marriage Q4 1919 The marriage cert would give you their ages and father's details, so you would be best placed to find the right people on the 1901 census. Merry |

There are no Gwendoline Constance Newtons registered between 1866 and 1920. There are just these two between 1890 and 1895: Newton Gwendoline Della Islington.1b 386 Birth 4 1891 Newton Gwendoline Matilda B Mere.5a 216 Birth 3 1890 I really think your next step should be the marriage certificate. When was their first child born? Liz |
