I am looking for ideas of what Bessy/Betsy could be short for so I can find her birth. I thought it might be Elizabeth, but she has a sister called Eliza on census who seems to tie in with a birth registered on BMD as Elizabeth. Am guessing they won’t both be called Elizabeth and would be grateful for any ideas. Knowing my luck it will be one of those family knicknames and she’s actually called something completely unrelated! Christine

Christine This is a good question as i am looking for someone called Betsy/Bessie and like you think it could have been something completly different. I will look back and check to see if anyone else replies.

I have come across sisters called Eliza and Elizabeth several times - they are different names. My 2g-grandmother was Elizabeth, and in 1851 was living with her parents and sister Eliza. Liz

In relation to this do you know if the first Elizabeth survived? My family have a habit of if a child dies naming the next one after it - in one family I have 4 chilren called John Regards Sue

Hi Sue, They are borth on 1861 Census and 1871 If Eliza is the other one's real name then my Elizabeth birth may not be right but it's the right period and place. sigh!

I also have two families with an Elizabeth and an Eliza. I sympathise, I have a Betsey born before civil reg, and she appears as Betsey in baptism register. Then she disappears, but she might be any one of about 3 Elizabeths that turn up later on censuses. nell

Hi Christine I have a family who named a daughter Elizabeth who was later known as Betsey. Then the parents had another daughter and named her Eliza. Heather
