carolyn its called a mistrancription. the census returns are hand written, someone (called a trancriber) then looks at the witing and types it up. when the writing is 'flowery' or perhaps smudged it can often look like a different letter. As In this case

our messages are crossing - explained in my previous thread. If you are looking for something which you think may have been misransscribed then put the minimum information in the search box. In this case I started with a first name and date and place of birth - and was just lucky to see a PARRY when I knew I was looking for a TARRY !!!

The 1881 census was obviously mistranscribed as PARRY I found the family by searching for Edwin (first name only), his year and place of birth The death in 1890 for Caroline fits in agewise

Caroline wife dob 1844 Fulham london Caroline Dau dob 1865 Lambeth london John son dob 1868 ' ' Edwin son dob 1870 ' ' I can't locate a census for 1881 If I have done this right by 1891 Census Edwin is a widower with 3 more children Alice 12 George 9 Albert 6 and what looks like Mannie on the census. George & Albert went to live with my g granma & g grandad Mary & Henry Scutt.( now their another story ) What I would like to know is when did Caroline die.
