Lorna You will need to look up the GRO referance number in the index pages - they are available on ancestry for free - and consist of a volume and a page number take the star from the address http://www.ancestry.*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx You then need to go to the GRO website to order the certificate, tick the box that asks Is the General Register Office Index known, then you only need to fill in the spaces that have a red star by then (after the box title.) You don't need to give the date, they would only use it as a checking point. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Hi Suzanne That would be brill if you could. His name is Thomas Grogan aged 72 and I believe it is Bury, but no idea where that is. Many thanks Lorna

As the first reply said, if you look in the GRO indexes you will get district, volume and page number. Then when you order it online you check the box for 'Is the GRO Reference known?' and enter those details. That way you won't need the exact date of death etc. Kate.

if you apply to the office where the death is registered that shoul be enough, before i was on line i did it that way and sentv a cheque, lorraine

I have ordered several death cert's from the 1920's since Ancestry got the Beta thing going, and have never been asked for an exact date..... Were you ordering it online from the GRO? Merry

Hi I am currently trying to get a death certificate of a relative who died in England. I've tried online but I need to have the exact date but all I know is that he died in Jan,feb or mar in 1922 and it was in Bury! Can anyone help out with this? Many thanks Lorna
