Hi there everyone, I am hoping someone out there will know the answer to this. I have just found a relative on the 1861 census and it has his occupation as SAWYER. Can anyone help me out with what this occupation was? Thanks for your time

Katherine You don't have to spend hours looking, you could just google 'sawyer definition' or use a dictionary. nell

If you put, specifically, in the search box definition: [word] Google pulls up all the dictionary definitions of [word] it can find online for you. Christine

Googling is really good, but not as nice and friendly as asking real people on here.....and if we didn't ask on here, I wouldn't know what a beaver blower did............................................................................................! Would I? Merry

I wouldn't like to ask about beaver blowing on an American forum!

Doesn't always have to be timber that they sawed. I have generations of stone sawyers in Wiltshire, from Christian Malford, Box and Corsham. Sometimes they graduated into being stone masons. Bev from Perth
