Thanks that answers my question. On the 1851 religious census in Kent there were several churhes called 'Latter Day Saints' including at least 1 on the isle of Sheppey. The Mormans didn't go to Utah till 1847, Smith died in 1844, (martyred, they say. I thought he died in a brawl.) I didn't realise they had branches in this country so early. The Mormans are 'The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latterd-Day Saints.' There is another sect who call themselves 'The [Original] Church of the Latter Day Saints.' This group don't practise baptism for the dead according to their web site. David

Dea No, its my hidey-Holden again! But I know there were lots of Tootells in the area - I have studied the Parish Registers till I know them off by heart, nearly. I do know that a bunch of Holdens went on the Great Plains Trek, from Wheelton, in 1840. One of them married a Presley, ho ho, wonder if I am in for dibs??? And of course, it wasnt just Holdens, it was half the village. For some reason it never occurred to me that MINE mmight have gone - and come back again, in time for the 1861. Olde Crone

Alan You cannot possibly have known when you posted your reply that you have just opened up a whole new idea to me! My missing 2 x GGF - supposedly born in Chorley - not a single record of him exists until he is 39 - I wonder, I just wonder, if he went to Utah with the first lot of recruits in 1840.... Thankyou! I have ancestors who joined the LDS Church in Flyford Flavel. Worcestershire in 1840. They are referred to as 'early converts'.

Yes, they are also known as the Latter Day Saints. Thats why they collect dead peoples names - they make them saints aswell.

Does anyone know when the L-DS Mormon Church first came to England? I have found a number of churches in the 1851 religious census who call themselves just 'Latter Day Saints' Would they be Mormons? I have looked on the L-DS site and also The Original LDS not to be confused with the L-DS, but can't find anything. David
