I have a rellie born c1853, on various census the place of birth varies between Battersea, Islington and just plain old Middx England. On looking at the original census i now think that maybe Battersea could in fact really say Balls Pond Road. Does anyone know how i find out what the registration district of this road would be in c1853 Many thanks Mo

I'd say it's borderline. the top end of its borders Essex Road and ST Pauls Road both of which lead down to Islington

Whenever I see this road name I always think of Tony Hancock's sketch about wishing he had some Latin, then he could be a bus conductor and shout 'Ballus Pondus Roadus'! I googled and found Balls Pond Road, N1, Hackney 7 mins West Balls Pond Road, N1, Islington 12 mins West

If you give us rellies details we can check what the actual census image says.

Helen Little Nell You asked!!! Robert Smith The easiest way to find the family is that the mother is down as Ann Smith born St Ives Huntingdonshire 1829 on 1871 census and 1827 on 1861 census. Mo

1871 just says Middlesex Islington. 1861 says Middlesex Balls Pond So it may not be Balls Pond Road, but just the area around Balls Pond, an area described by The National Gazetteer (1868) : 'BALL'S POND, a chapelry and suburban district in the parish of Islington and hundred of Ossulstone, in the county of Middlesex, 2 miles to the N. of the city of London. This rapidly increasing suburb is situated near the New River, and takes its name from a pond at a place of entertainment, kept by one John Ball, in the 17th century. The North London railway passes through the district. There are numerous almshouses, including the Metropolitan, Cutlers', Bookbinders', and others. The living is a perpetual curacy in the division of London, of the value of £420, and in the patronage of trustees. The church, dedicated to St. Paul, was erected by Sir James Barry. Contiguous to the church are a vestry-hall and National schools.' From http://homepages.gold*ac.uk/genuki/MDX/Islington/

Thanks!! History lesson as well!! I have come to a brick wall with this family. I have the birth cert of one of the other brothers, Isaac, on that it states his Mum was Sarah nee Tinkler born St Ives Hunts. I cant find birth of daughter Martha, even though baptism it is on familysearch as being in Norwich, i did send for the cert of a Martha born Yarmouth but wrong parents. I cant find a marriage of William and either a Ann or Sarah Tinkler and i dont know what to do next. As Robert is the blood line of my family it is him i am really interested in. Any ideas please, they would be gratefully received!! Mo
