Is there a way to get an Irish cert if i dont know the date of birth? I know the fathers name, occupation and mothers first name plus an approximate year of birth. The thing is i dont know where. In the 1901 Scottish census my grt grt grandfather only puts Ireland (the silly man). I'm either going to have to take a trip to Ireland or pay for someone to look for it arent i? Which records office would it be? Thanks Mhairi |

There's an Irish research page on GR, I think. There are certainly threads about it (you can use the thread-search to find them). Iin the meantime... There are Irish records on the IGI. This was recommended recently: http://www.from-ireland.net/gene/district.htm This is the equivalent of GRO: http://www.groireland.ie/ This might be useful: http://ireland.anglican.org/library/libroots.html Christine |

Thanks Christine i'll check them out. Sadly the IGI births are not for the year/s i want (1879-1881) and i wont be able to get to a centre in the near future to look at the others they have. Mhairi |

I believe that the ROI's GRO holds records for the whole of Ireland prior to partition (1921). So I think that Dublin's your best bet! |

well in march (when i'd be able to go) flights from Edinburgh are only 49p (one way excluding tax) so its very tempting. Ireland are gong to have to do something about their records. Get the indexs up or something. Although say that i like a challenge Thanks for the help/suggestions Mhairi |

Hi the LDS Family History Centre nearest you should be able to tell you which of their centres hold the BMD INDEX for the whole of Ireland for the years you want. If its too far (mine is an hour and a half round trip through a busy city!) ask them if you can order in copies of the index for the years you want. Reading upside down yesterday (I am nosey) the man opposite me was ordering marriages for 1865/66 so I think its possible . If you have the name and its not too common you should find him and it will tell you the area as well. Have a look in the catalogue of the familysearch site, I've just ordered WW1 Service Records which I didn't know they had available. Best Wishes Teresa Reference is Quarterly returns of births in Ireland, 1864-1955, with index to births, 1864-1921 |

Just a warning - when I had a look through the Irish BMD indexes at my nearest Family History Centre, all the bits I especially wanted to look at were missing from the microfilm! So just be aware that it is not complete. Still, at least it was there, I didn't have to order it in or anything. If the birth was in Northern Ireland then the GRONI will do a search over a couple of years either side of the date you give them included in the price of the cert, and you can order it online, but you do have to know the county and town. I don't really know about the Republic of Ireland. Good luck! Kate. |

Thanks for the conitnued help/suggestions. Although you can order certs online via the GRONI you still need a birth date plus mothers maiden name, town, county. They dont make it easy for you. I think my best bet would be to see if anyones going to a LDS centre and ask them to take a look. Since there isnt one where i live during the week and the one in my home home doesnt open at weekends. Thanks again Mhairi |
