hi all, is ancestry safe? i want to veiw some records on there, but i don't want to pay the full subscription, as i believe they take it again when it runs out! that's a bit much isn't it !! shouldn't they at least ask if you want it first!!!!! all i want is the pay per view for 2 weeks for 4.95. but i'm wondering if they will take it again without my permission?? i am very wary of subscribing with them. chris

Pay per view gives you a number of viewings for the money they take. Once it runs out you have to buy more, they don't take any more money. And if you do take out a sub you can cancel again. I've had a quarterly sub which I stopped when it ran out with no problems. I then did some payperviews but took advantage of a discount to take the yearly sub. nell

My mum in law cancelled her 2 weeks free trial today by phone (free) and was chatting to a very nice American man about the weather! No problems. Maggy

I think you'll find that, if you get bitten by the bug of tracing your family's history, a subscription to Ancestry is almost indispensible. It has so much all in one place, you can view things over and over again, there are no time limits to keep track of (other than the subscription) and it's just downright useful!!! I held off buying an annual subscription, but once I did the floodgates opened and I was able to discover a lot, and very easily. They called me to ask about renewing my subscription a few weeks before it was up.

I had a free trial 2/3 years ago? and signed up at the end as I found it indispensable....And I still do! My only problem with them happened this year....Totally of my own making as it turned out! I was sent an e.mail saying my subscription was due for renewal and they would be taking it from my credit card on xx/xx/xx. I didn't read all of it, I was happy for it to continue, so I missed the bit which asked me to check the credit card details I had registered with the site. 2 or so weeks later I did my usual daily log in and it wouldn't recognise me, kept asking me to sign up.....You guessed it?.... My registered credit card had expired and I then had to join again. I would recommend giving the 14 day trial a go....Just remember to put it in your diary to cancel it about day 12...But I bet you end up paying up, like I did!! :) Chris

Go for the annual subscription. I dont know how anybody who is serious about family history manages without it. Its cheaper to use the annual payment. They do send you an email when it is due again. Only if you dont then cancel do they take the money. You wont cancel, I bet. I have had my sub for 3 years. They only had the 1891 census then, that was any use to me. I still didnt cancel. Dont forget you get the 1851-1901 census with 1841 coming soon. I know all the BMD's are free at the moment, but they wont always be. Think how much 1837online costs over a year. Go on! Go for the yearly sub. Do take advantage of the 14 day trial though, I bet you wont cancel though. Margaret

Am I the only one who sees this thread title and thinks: 'Is it secret? Is it safe?' Oh, so it is just me, then!

Why not take the free trial first and do all the urgent bits. I think I saw they are offering a months free trial somewhere. Personally, I would bother with a trial or a short sub - go to Lost Cousins site, use the 20% off offer and get the whole year for less than £55. There is no way you can do this hobby so cheaply and so comprehensively.
