Lorraine I know you said about dying 'but not at sea'....Is that because you have eliminated the possibility? If not 1837online www.1837online(.)com has marine death indices in the overseas section covering 1837 to 1965. Chris |

Oh right!! Yes, complicated.....maybe she told her children her hubby was their father......as the years went by (and having, presumably, never seen him) his first name became forgotten (by the children)....... Have you thought about getting marriage certs for any of your grandfather's siblings, to see what they said?? (If they married, that is!) Merry |

hi merry this is complicated, she was married to a william henry purvis so i took it for granted he was th dad untill i started gettin birth certificates for my great grandmothers children, but father unknown on all of them and on two of there mariage certificates this george purvis appears and not a brother of william henry . x |

Was your great-gandmother unmarried on your granddad;s birth cert?? If her name was Purvis (ie her maiden name) then it seems unlikely that granddad's father would be a Purvis too. Obviously, he MIGHT be, but it was very commonplace to invent a father if one was illegitimate.......... Or have I got the wrong end of the stick? Merry |

thanks penny just had a look, im thinking he was probably to old to actually be in war, but then i have him as deceased sailor in 1944 yet apparently alive in 1943 he could be totaly made up even, im really clutching at straws, I dont suppose a sergant his supposed son would lie about his father ,although there was no mention on his birth certificate of father. If im confusing people i will give up tonight having a glass or 3 of wine, ok just read this through george purvis is on his sons wedd cert but not birth thanks |
