Thanks to everyone who helped with my last query! Back on the census route again, I've come across an entry for a relative in a workhouse. the 'condition as to marriage' entry looks much like a D (though it may not be!). Does anyone with vastly more experience know what this means? He was 75. If that means anything. Many thanks:)

Hi - I think that's a D for Ditto - meaning 'as above'...

It is ditto ' - that is the same as above - single. I think you can see the ditto marks underneath - you might find that the squiggle over the top of the ditto mark has been done after by an enumerator sorting out statistics.

Leah and Elaine Thanks. I did wonder if it was but just prefered to have another opinion.

I think its probably S for single Sue

Saffron, I think the D is for Ditto; so it appears he is single. Cheers, Horatia

That's brilliiant. Thanks for the help. He was married. I can't find his wife in either the 1881 or 1891 census's (yet!!). If he is listed as single and not widower, do you think it's possible his wife left him? (Incidently, he was listed as living alone in 1881)

If you look carefully, you'll see that the enumerator has written the ditto mark (ie, ''), and then someone has added that strange circular thing afterwards when tallying. Presumably it was their idea of an S! Incidentally, using zoom in Ancestry is a handy way of seeing stuff more clearly.

I've spotted the ditto mark now, I didn't see it before. It's nice to find more pairs of eye on here, it really helps.
