Has anyone heard of the name of St. Clare as a first name? It sounds almost 'made up' to me! It's on a marriage certificate that arrived today for my husband's grandparents (under name of the bride's father) I tried to locate him on Ancestry and FreeBMD but can't find him anywhere, not even on a census. The trouble is, I can't even locate the grandmother's birth entry at the moment and I have very little info to go on. Aileen

Do you think that it would be pronounced 'Sinclair'? If you think about it St. John as a name is often pronounced ' Sinjon'. only a suggestion! Louise

I agree with everyone else!!! St Clair sounds like Sinclair as St John sounds like Sinjun..... How about you give us the details from the cert?? Have spent half the day on ''Smith'' so this might make a nice change!! Merry

Thanks for your contributions. Re: the certificate, In the column 'father's name and surname' it definitely says 'St. Clare Poole' , and was as clear as a bell. I agree it is probably pronounced Sinclair but I tried looking up that variation with no joy. He was deceased at the time of his daughter's marriage in 1925 The fact that Julie's OH's friend has the same name gives me hope!! LOL Aileen

Aileen Just spoke to OH and he said maybe try to look for your St Clare as Saint Poole as his friend is only known as Saint. Julie

I had a cousin whose middle name was Sinclair on his birth certificate, by the time he married he had changed it to St Clair. Perhaps he thought that was more upmarket. On the other hand, if St Clair really was the patron saint of TV, that might explain it as he was a television actor. Andrew.
