Please can someone help? I have my g/g/grandfather on 1851 at home with parents and brother: Father Henry Norris b:1813 Chelsea Mother Charlotte b: 1814 Westminster Brother Henry b: 15 July 1838(from family search) can't find him anywhere else. On 1871 Father,Mother and brother are is at same place. James had married Emma Ewer 2.12.1860 at Upper Chelsea. On 1871 have found James and Emma with 4 of their children. James died 8.2 1877 of Typhoid in Stockwell London. A Possible for him on 1861 census. At 5 Grove(r) Road Fulham but he is recorded as son? Emma is recorded as wife/son? Folio 104 page 56 if you want to look. Now comes my problem i can't find James's birth certificate anywhere and until i find this i can't find his mothers maiden name. G/G/Grandfather was James Norris born 1841 Chelsea Last week i thought i had found him so sent for certificate but no when it arrived (wrong one1840 Jun 1/4 vol page 257. Ann

Birth registration didn't become compulsory until 1875 so he may never have been registered. However, if this is the case you can always look for his baptism at the County Record Office. Cheers, Horatia

Hi Ann, If you can't find James, could you not send for Henry's birth certificate? That should have his mother;s maiden name. March quarter 1838 Kensington Vol 3 page 181 (Free BMD) The July date was his christening. Regards, Carol

someone else had a problem with ancestry yesterday, it fixed itsel after they logged out and relogged back in. I've been finding after putting England it then changes to Irelands counties! Anyway, I have had much better success in going through the BMD Beta search. Try that instead. SEARCH BMD on right hand side list scroll down to the window at bottom and scroll through to England BMD you will see some say BETA beside it. These are photocopies of the actual books used. I could not find births or deaths for a few rellies but found them in the books.
