Could I have some thoughts on this please? This is what I have: Henry George Elliott died Jan 1960 age 61 yrs Lambeth Henry George Elliott married 1931 (Feb) age 32 to Mary Warman in Lambeth Henry’s father is down on the cert as deceased William Edward Elliott wheelwright I applied and have just received a birth cert for a Henry whom I believed to be my grandfather!! It says born 27th December 1898 Father: William James Elliott Mother: Ellen Annie Elliott formerly Bowen Fathers occ : Carman Born Lambeth in fact it’s about 1 street away I think from where my nan lived in 1901!! I think what is confusing me is that William has the middle name James on this birth cert? But my aunt told my dad that their dads birthday was about 28th Dec My dad and his late brother both have either the William or Henry as their middle names and my aunt has the name Ellen – wondered where this could have come from as I have traced their mothers side and it doesn’t appear, maybe im thinking too much? The thing is I can’t find them on the 1901 census – and my eyes have crossed looking for the marriage of Bowen to Elliott. What does anyone think? Do I have the right person?? Debs x

I'm not sure how I'd go with this Have you traced when WIlliam died - was it sufficiently early enough for his son to not know his full name and job i.e. when he was little - not that this means anything but would help convince me. A wheelwright is quite a skilled job and a carman isn't particularly - although I suppose if finding work as a wheelwright got hard he could have switched to the latter. Zoe

Zoe, That is what im thinking about the occupation, as Henry wasnt a skilled man he was a labourer and I thought he would have followed his father. I will carry on searching for his death, but if im not convinced here would applying for his military records clear anything up for me? dad has his official number and medals so it wouldnt be too hard. Thank you Debs x

Merry, Your a star.. How do you do it?? So is Nellie another name for Ellen? and would you say the Edward and the James are just mistakes on everyones part? Going through the deaths at the moment but you have bought me a step nearer thank you. Debs x

If his military records are from 1st World War there's only 33% chance that they survived. If they did survive they may contain name for his next of kin which would be a parent if he was unmarried. Or a home address which you could check against directoires to see if one one of teh matching parents also lived there. I know it's a long trawl but your easiest option may be to look at ever Henry born in the relevant timeframe in Lambeth on ancestry and check their fathers name and occupation. They could have mistakenly been transcribed with a neighbours surname for example Zoe

Thanks Zoe, I know he was in both WW's Merry has found the marriage so maybe I need to see if I can find her on the 1901 census under Nellie not Ellen! Appreciate your help. Debs x Just wish my dad remembered more as im flying over next week for a visit.

Yes, Nellie is a diminutive of Ellen, though it can be a name in it's own right too! I can't see then in 1901 either!! Off to fetch children now......... Merry

If he was in both WW's then his military record won't be in the burnt records at Kew (the ones where a lot don't survive.....) To get hiis army record (not cheap!) you would need to contact: Officers or Soldiers whose regular or reserve service ended between 1921 and 1997 Army Personnel Centre HQ Secretariat Historical Disclosures Mail Point 400 Kentigern House 65 Brown Street Glasgow G2 8EX Tel: 0845 600 9663, option 3 For further info see this website: http://www.army.mod.uk/contacts/divisions/records.htm Merry
