I have traced my great grandfather James Gibson b.1847 in Biddulph on the 1881 and 1901 census but cannot locate him on any others censuses . (Is that the plural? ) I obtained his marriage certificate and found his father' name but where do I go from here? I am fairly new to this. I have been using FreeCen, LDS and free BMD.Can anyone recommend some sites. Are the subscription sites more comprehensive than the free ones? I'd be grateful for any help.

Change your request to ask for a look up on the 1851/1861/1871 census giving as much information as you have. Father's name, occupation or mother and siblings names and I am sure someone will look them up on Ancestry for you. Good Luck Irene

Definitly Ancestry - Ignore all of the negative comments on this board about it, it's the best site by far. The 1841 census is coming soon. Yearly subsciption is around £70, however I tend to use pay per view which costs about £7 for one weeks viewing including 20 census images.

many thanks to all you lovely friendly people out there! It's great to know so many of you are willing to help other people. I shall visit this site reguarly. i have no other friends or family tracing their ancestors so it can be a bit lonely at times.Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! nice to know I,m not the only one to find this hobby rather addictive. husband bought me a lap top for Xmas. I thinkhe was rather hoping I would spend more time with him. I do, well at least in body, haven't a clue what he talks to me about!

It really would be worth you taking an ancestry sub though as then you could really sit there 24/7 like the rest of us and wade through all the family names. It is worth it.
