Hi there I need to find out the maiden name of one of my relatives, have ordered one of her children's birth certificates but can't read the writing, can't narrow down any of her other children's birth certs (it's a common name!) or find her marriage certificate (her husband's name had to be Cooper...) So - I was hoping that maybe her maiden name might be on her death certificate, which I have the reference for? Here's hoping... Could anybody advise before I order? Many thanks Karen

I very much doubt maiden name would be on a death certificate. Sue

Hi Merry Nobody can read it I'm afraid, it's been handed around the family (the other half is trying his hand again)! Unfortunately I don't have a scanner... wish I did! Do you think it's worth sending it back to the GRO? Thanks Karen

If it was mine I would contact the local reg office where the cert was originally issued. Their copy will be in different handwritting to the GRO one and unless you have an out of focus GRO copy (ie it's just rubbish handwriting) the GRO will probably be none the wiser! So phone the local office (where was the registration?? Fingers crossed it wasn't a London district??) and explain that you have bought a copy from the GRO but you can't read the maiden name. They will need to know all the details from the cert including the registration date (as well as the birth date etc) and also the subdistrict. This will help them to find their copy. Hopefully you will get a result! Merry
