Nudge for Val This isnt the one Val. Im sure we all worked it out together on a thread. You open your documents file and highlight them all and then click on copy to cd or something? Using cd burning software on your puter - Nero burning or something else. Youd have to do it for pictures and everything else. Ill have a go at doing it again later.

Thanks guys, dont think I have that much really, just about 200 letters (I work from home) and a lot of schedules etc for works. I will have a go when one of my sons comes home. Shirley, may be just the case, Im a real house slut - spend too much time on this site!

My pc was getting Noisy & then occasionally rebooted itself. Have just got it back from pc hospital!!! & they found it was full of dust & fluff causing it to over heat & do safety cut out.. Was told to take side off tower occasionally & hoover gently out as all pc will attract dust & this will eventually cause loud fan & then cut offs. which can occasionally do damage to the pc itself. Was lucky mine was ok but will do cleanups now as advised. Shirley

Backing up your entire hard drive is something that can be done easily using Windows XP and a bit of know how. We do it on a weelky basis with our business machines. As the amount of information stored on your hard drive can be many gigabytes it's not possible to store it on CD or even a DVD. What you need to do is install a 2nd hard drive into your PC as a slave, you can then copy everything from the master drive to the slave, it took nearly 5 hours to back up our biggest main hard drive last night but there was 60 gigabytes of information of there to copy over. You can get an 80 gigabyte hard drive for about £40 at a computer fair. Regards Ron www.genealogyprinters(.)com

Just use windows explorer and drag and drop the files you want to save to your CD burning softwre. If you want to back up your WHOLE hard drive, I would suggest a zip drive or an external or portable hard drive, as a CD only holds about 700mb of date. If you have 40gb or whatever of data on your hard drive, thats a lot of CD's! Ian

It will vary slightly according to the software on your computer, but it should be fairly straightforward, basically firing up the CD writer program, putting a CD into the drive, selecting the files/directories you want to copy and telling it to go ahead.

The computer, though less than a year old is making an occasional grinding noise and it prompted me to think I should back up all my information - not just my family tree stuff - from the puter on to discs. I know I should really know how to do this, but can someone please tell me in very simple terms how to achieve it. Thanks.
