Does anyone know when this facility is to resume? It is particularly frustrating for someone like myself, that uses GR as a 'working' Site, Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham.

If I were you I would send a message to GR to ask them. When I have tried exporting a GEDCOM in the past I have found that if you just keep trying over and over again it will work eventually but I don't know what the situation is at the moment. Kate.

Kate, the Export facility has not been available for over 2 weeks. GR says that it will be available in the New Year (didn't say which one). And yes William I am like you and use GR as the primary method of entering data. In a previous post on this topic I said that I hadn't bothered to contact GR because when I had attempted previously on 2 separate occassions I got no response. Well the good news is I got off my backside and emailed them about the no export facility. The bad news is that that was 2 days ago and I'm still waiting. Please do try to contact them yourself-you may have better luck or maybe we have to reach some threshhold number of complaints before they answer. Now I'm wondering whether I should trust putting so much genealogy material into GR. If we can't export then it's a oneway process. I've only got about 350 names, others have thousands. God help us if their system crashes. They would have all their data backed up....wouldn't they? Nick

Just to add my name to the interested parties here. I have up until now used GR to put all my details up. I've now downloaded the Mormon Personal Ancestry File (PAF) program and am desperately waiting to download my GR tree to my computer and be able to look at the most complete version of my tree offline. If anyone gets an answer to this question, then can then please post it here. It seems like I've been waiting ages!!

William If you do decide to keep your tree 'elsewhere' too, have a look at www.tribalpages(.)com Its free as long as you don't want any extras. Chris

M.G.H.S That makes interesting reading.......I wonder if it came in with the new owners of GR, seeing they are in the media business. I suppose they COULD, possibly, want to use our trees to their advantage. Thank you for bringing this to our attention MGHS. Chris

I don't know about the current problems with exporting your tree, but can I just say that when I exported my tree to my new Family HIstorian software several months ago, the software brought up a message saying something like my GR tree had not been trailered correctly. When I looked at my tree through my new software I found that I had individuals who were not connected to anyone, and also information missing. My tree was about 700+ names at the time and this did cause me some problems. I now tend to input all new information to my software and not to my GR tree. If I want to give my contacts more information I can send to them a print out from my software. If anyone is looking for a software package then I have to say the Family Historian is brilliant, I thoroughly recommend it. There's a new update coming soon which will enable me to set up my own website - can't wait!

The export facility from GR hasn't been available since before Christmas, and the inability to do so is becoming a pain in the bum. On the subject of TribalPages, I had an older, smaller version of my tree saved to my computer from GR. A couple of weeks ago, concerned that the export facility still wasn't available on this site, I exported my saved tree from my puter to TP. Of course it wiped any information off that was already entered. I was given a message that the export was successful and the gedcom would be downloaded within 24 hours, and I would be notified when it was completed. Nearly three weeks later I am still waiting for notification, and I am the only person on my TribalPages tree. Certainly makes scintillating viewing. Sometimes you wonder why you even bother.........

Well I said I had not received a reply from Support at GR for over 2 days. So I contacted 'Elizabeth' in the PR section and got a reply from Estelle who said Support had not received my question. Here is a copy of her reply:- Thanks for your email Nick, I am unsure why your emails did not reach us, but I will let them technical team know. The new gedcom export facility is currently being tested by our technical. We wuold rather not put this live yet becuase if there are any bugs in it then a tree cuold be incorrectly exported. if this is in then imported back to the site it could cause untold problems. We would rather make sure it is working correctly and then allow members to export their trees again. It should be on the site in the next few weeks. Regards Estelle Nick
