I think a rellie who you would not be here had they not been born is a direct relative and the brothers, sisters, children of these people are blood relatives. Is that what you wanted to know? Gloria |

Your direct ancestors are your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, and any number of great-grandparents. Aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters, half-uncles, second cousins twice removed, or whatever, would be blood relations. Anybody who married any of these would only be related to you by marriage (unless also related to you by blood, of course.) Hope that clears it up. Kate. |

Dawn, Sorry, but what is it you are asking? Are you asking if your Great-grandparents are your direct ancestors? If so, yes. Their children (your grandmother's Aunts and Uncles) are your 2G-Aunts and Uncles, and so are not your direct ancestors. Liz |

What is a direct ancestor? A direct ancestor is someone from whom you are directly descended, so this would include your parents, your 4 grandparents, your 8 great-grandparents, your 16 great-great grandparents, your 32 great-great-great grandparents and so on. All of them will have contributed to the genes that make you who you are. What is a blood relative? A blood relative is anyone with whom you share an ancestor (which means that you'll share some of the same genes). Most people on your family tree are your blood relatives. So long as you have proved that there is a connection, it doesn't matter whether the common ancestor (the one who connects you and your relative) was still alive at the time of the census. |

The reason is, assuming it is 'Lost Cousins', that if you share a direct ancestor with somebody then they must be related to you, but if you only share a blood relative (say, Fred) with them then you might not be their relative because you could be related to Fred's mother and the other person related to Fred's father, if you see what I mean. Kate. |

Working out relationships can be very confusing and a real pain. The best 2 things to use are relationship charts and anetafel numbers. Relationship charts show you how you are related to everyone in your tree - ie what a 3rd cousin twice removed is. What a 5th cousin is. etc etc etc. Anetafel numbers are the standard used when talking about direct ancestors - ie grandparents, great grandparents etc etc. they are internationally recognised. If you google search for a relationship chart and a pedigree chart with anetafel numbers. |
