Veronica - you have confused me - You say NO you don't have to ask, but from what you then say, I think that you are saying that you should ask first, or is it me who is reading it strangely ?? Anyway, Allen, I think that even though you have been allowed to view, you should ask if is o.k. to take information from it. If I am allowed to view someone's tree who is connected to me, I always ask them, firstly, if it is o.k. for me to add relatives from their tree into mine, and secondly, - If I am contacted by another person, also connected to our family, is it o.k. for me to pass their information onto them. So far, everyone has always said yes to both, so I cannot offend anyone. Dea |

Things to consider: Children cannot be considered to give informed consent to allow their names to be published. Circumstances change, and people who are perfectly happy to have their details published today may subsequently change their mind. Speaking personally, I might take note of living relatives, but I would not publish the details on a website and I would refer to my original contact rather than pass information on without up to date consent. |

Personally I would say that adding living relatives to trees would depend on where the tree is. If your tree is on GR or a similar site I would say that unless you have asked each individuals permission to include them that you should leave them out or call them Living at the very least. If your tree is on computer and you don't mind copying it and doung some pruning before uploading it to GR and other sites then who can stop you. Also tribal pages allows you to password protect your tree so visitors need to ask you if they want to see the tree and you can set the site so that your tree will privatise the details of living relatives I did have my 15 year old brother ask to be included on be GR tree but I only have his name, as I do for all living relatives. All the DoB's say Private as I had privatised the Gedcom before uploading the tree onto here. |
