My grt grt grandfather was born William Manning supposedly in 1840, but i've had a few differences with his year of birth. Firstly, i have been to the place where he is buried with his wife and found the death year of 1923 aged 83, which would mean born 1840, all the census' that i have found him on all say born c1840, but here comes the problem. I recently got his marriage certificate which is dated 1872, and it says that he was 27 when he got married, but this would make his birth year as c1845, do you think that he lied about his age when he got married or would it be a typo mistake. I need to be reasurred cos i've only just realised this mistake. thanks for the help Tracy |

If you can point us to one of the census entries, it is easier to look - so we know we have the right one. Jim |

I can't find anything much about his birth, only that he was christened on 7 feb 1840, The best census to look is the 1881 census, where he is living with his wife and children, he was living at College Houses, Hodnet, Shropshire. |

My g grandfather was born dec 1880, he married in 1910 aged 26?? given the date it should have been 29. Got his death certificate in 1936 says he was 53 right age to tally with marriage so I guess he went through his life saying he was 3 years younger than he was. Censuses from 1881-1901 tally with birth year??? very strange but his name wasn't very common so I know I got the right one. He might have had reasons for wanting to be a different age when he married. |

This would appear to be his baptism in 1840 Jim IGI Individual Record FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0 British Isles Search Results | Download | Pedigree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WILLIAM MANNING Male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: 07 FEB 1840 Prees, Shropshire, England ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: THOMAS MANNING Family Mother: MARTHA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. Tracy, If you're sure he was christened in 1840, his birth year on his marriage cert must be wrong. Or did i miss something else? I've had a few like that too! Sorry if you have already spotted that, Regards, Sue |

so do you think that he just lied about his age when he got married, cos everything else fits? |

Possibly, or perhaps the register has been wrongly transcribed. Jim |
