If I have told you all once, I've told you a hundred times - Just because their name is on a gravestone, don't assume that they are in there! Why don't I listen to myself? Last night, I was trying to sort out three very confusing Monumental Inscriptions. One for Joseph Stubbs and his wife Mary One for Joseph Lea Stubbs and his parents One for Joseph Lea Stubbs and his wife Mary. It took me SEVEN hours, with help from two lovely people on Records, to sort it out. Joseph Stubbs married Mary. He buried her, and five of THEIR children, in one grave. He married again, this time using his 'Sunday' name of Joseph Lea Stubbs, to another Mary. Several of their children died, and went in a new grave, along with one or two of his 'first' family, cos the first grave was full up. His second wife died before him, and went in Grave 2. Ever the diplomat, when he died, he didnt want to show favouritism, so opted to go in with his Dad (Mum buried elsewhere, she was a second wife, too). This grave was topped up with a few grandchildren and a couple of daughters-in-law. This man had 19 children, and it was only when I hit on the idea of putting the deaths in chronological order, that I twigged what was going on! If I could reach, I'd kick myself hard. Olde Crone |
