Do we know why no father would be named on a cert? |

I have Joseph Haywood, born 05/02/1859. Mother listed as Elizabeth Haywood. No maiden name or former name given. Any ideas as to why the father might not be listed? Would Haywood be her maiden name? Many thanks in advance. Vicki. |

Most likely reason is because the child is illegitimate. Sam x |

Was this common? I was under the (misguided?) impression that until the swinging sixties every nice girl was married before she contemplated naughtiness! ;-) |

Yes, it was very common. I think our parents / grandparents gave us the impression that nothing went on until a couple were married but my research gives a very different impression! Do you have the marriage cert? I have one from c1880 and it actually states 'illegitimate' in the space where the father's name should be! Sam x |

I have our Elizabeth on the censuses (never know if that's a real word!) and she is manless until she remarries again in the 1860s. Thanks again! |

Despite the wildly differing moral climate over the centuries, the illegitimacy rates remained at a steady ten per cent from 1556 to the late 1980s! They just went to great lengths to cover it up, that's all! If anyone researching their Family Tree has not found at least ONE illegitimate child in each generation, then I would say You haven't looked properly! Olde Crone |
