hi can anyone tell me if i can get information from workhouse records in any given year. the year in question is 1852. regards jackie.

The year is not important. You need to check whether the relevant workhouse records are available from the local Record Office. Cheers, Horatia

This site, below, is really useful for telling you what info is held by the various record offices. You will probably find, for instance, that the admission books will be held for a complete 100 year run, except for the one year period you are interested in!! Workhouse records will be in the records office, but they probably aren't indexed so it's a laborious look through. It took me most of one afternoon to go through one year's worth of admissions once! nell

I once wanted to check some admissions registers for the workhouse. I knew the boys were in the workhouse for the census 1851, but wanted to know why and when they were admitted. I just needed to work backwards. Luckily I found them in December 1850 but it still took me a time to find them. The workhouse records were divided into weeks of the month I think. Cheers, Horatia

You can search the catalogue for the Shropshire Archives on the A2A website. A search using 'Poor Law Union' got loads of hits Pete

Only for information but The Workhouse Records for Basford, Nottingham are held by Nottingham University as they are part of the Highbury Hospital collection. The Records Office does not even have a copy of anything!

hi helen,pete,horatio and pippa. contacted shropshire archives they stated that the records they do have would not be much help if i am doing my family history. thanks for the information this man is not to be found, i think this part of my tree is finished. kind regards jackie.
