Any ideas on what' born in a wooden box' could mean? With sisters called Lemorlaynor and Treanneter I really wonder what this family were like!!

My mum's friend had this in her tree. If this is near Ashby De La Zouch it is the old name for Woodville. It was the main route from Liverpool to London and there was a Wooden Toll box on the road hence Wooden Box.

I thought the nearest thing it could be was maybe a temporary shelter following their home being flooded - are their names Cornish or something? The nearest in my family was my granny puting the youngest baby in a drawer with a blanket (she didn't close the drawer) and as a small child I was terrified that someone wouldn't see the sleeping baby and close the drawer.

Pippa, you're probably right. One of the family was born in Ashby de la Zouch (although it was transcribed as being in Ireland!!)

For future hunting... I'm not convinced that Scrooby is/was in Lincolnshire - it comes up now in Notts in Multimap, and was in the East Retford District (Notts). It's just a bit north of (East) Retford and south of Bawtry - on what looks to me like the old A1 (Great North Road). Christine

Hi folks, could Scrooby possibly have been mistranscribed/misheard for Scawby? I have looked at Ogilvy's Roads and Chapman and Hall's maps of Lincs and Notts, all early 19th century, and it appears that Scrooby is definitely in Notts and Scawby in Lincs. The Chapman and Hall maps usually show any isolated outlying bits of counties, and neither place appears to be in one of those. Offered for what its worth.:-) Roger
