Can anyone offer any help here please? I'm looking for George Evans born in Leicestershire 1830 according to the cenus. He was married to Mary and they had 9 children from 1852-1874, being Walter, Alfred, Ada, Harriet, Emma, Elizabeth, Maryann, George and William. Now question is, I can find George in all the Cenus(s) but not on the 1851 cenus? Any clues? Surely he should be on the 1851 Cenus too? Long shot here, but I was just thinking was Leicestershire actually called Leicestershire back in 1851? I know that Rutland was in there some where and at one time was part of Leicestershire and then became a separte county, in fact think it got changed back and forth quite a few times? Thanks so much for any help! Fiona |

Leicestershire was always Leicestershire, but boundaries have changed over the years; and Rutland, which used to be a separate county, got absorbed into Leicestershire at the big reorganisation some years ago. It has (nominally?) escaped again since then. There's a ''Who are you looking for in Leicestershire'' thread on this board - try the thread-search, with & without the ''-shire'' bit. Christine PS - which was the census-year you found George Evans in? |

Hi Mike : ) From Leicester How are doing? What a star! Thank you! I didn't realise all the help you have given the folk needing Leicestershire lookups. What an expert! Very nice to hear from you again! Yes, the George Evans I'm looking up is from Carolines side of the family. Her fathers side, so old George would have been my great great grandfather! The name Findley does ring a bell, so I'm sure the info is correct. Talking of family we lost Brenda my Gran in October. I went over for the funeral. So I got to meet up with a few other members of the family too! So I'm right in thinking that the other George and Harriet you mentioned would have been Georges parents? Question, you might be able to answer, can I order certs from Britain? Do they send them over here? I have no clue as to where to get them from. Well, I wish you a very happy new year from over the pond! Would you mind helping me out again if I need some more info, please : ) Take care for now and thanks again! Fiona |
