Missing birth ...?

Hi I am struggling with my partner's family tree; I have posted on here about it before but I am now struggling with each individual part. I know his great grandfather had a number of children, both through census returns and his father's memories of aunts and uncles. However, one birth certificate remains elusive... Carrie Jepson was born c.1889. Her mother was Katherine 'Jepson' (nee Gordon) and her father was Fred Barber Jepson. Fred was already married to an Alice Jepson nee Graves and had a son with her but by the 1891 census he was listed with Catherine Jepson as his wife. Both times he is living in Manchester, although Catherine is listed as Scottish which is remembered by my father in law. (Incidentally, Fred would go on to have a further child with Katherine before having 2 more with Alice and a final one with Katherine - in that order!). I should also explain that I know who her parents are because she got married in Scotland (and both parents are listed on Scottish marriage certificates) and I have chosen the spelling as starting with a K because there is a grandchild with the name also spelt with a K. I cannot find a Carrie Jepson, Katherine Gordon or Katherine Jepson (or variation thereof) that could be a match. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

Excellent, thanks, I will get the certificate. Just a quick question ... how did you find it? I have a number of other 'missing' certificates ... e.g. Katherine and Fred's marriage cert. ... and I am still quite new to all this. Thanks again Jo

Well as soon as you said she was born about 1889, I thought, ''I bet it will be Q4 1888 which isn't yet transcribed''!!!! I was too lazy and soaked in red wine to look up the page for free on FreeBMD, so I did the lookup on Family Relatives which has fully transcribed GRO indexes 1866-1920. If you decide to buy a sub for this site it would pay you to read carefully their info about searching before you begin! Back to FreeBMD: Have you 1) seen the coverage charts on FreeBMD that show you what's been transcribed and what hasn't? (go to Main Page, Information, Coverage Charts) 2) realised you can view most Quarters pages on that site even if they have not yet been transcribed (go to Main Page, View Images and fill in the boxes) I know I'm not making much sense.....any more questions? Merry (rushing off to bed before you reply!!!!!!!)

I didn't know any of what you just told me. A revelation! Guess I know what I will be doing for every evening for the next 3 months! Might ask for some help with my next 'missing' cert if I still can't find it. You did it much quicker than me - even with you telling me where to see it! No more questions for now, promise! Thanks again for your help! Jo

Hi Merry I was wondering about Family Relatives - when searching for a marriage do you get the option to view others on page - as you do on Ancestry? If so, how can I get on to this web site? I've googled Family Relatives but it doesn't seem to bring it up. Thanks in advance

Hi Angela, Yes you can see the other people with the same marriage ref, but that is only for the fully transcribed period, 1866-1920. Obviously after 1911 it's irrelevant as you get the spouse surname quoted. (the ''marriage match'' thingy costs four unuts, so you would only want to use it when you can't find the partner on FreeBMD) Hope that helps Merry

Angela between 1866 and 1920 you can now look at others on the same page for marriges on Family relatives, the same as you can on FreeBMD and ancestery. There is an option on the right hand side of the page to veiw image and to see matches.

Thank you all for your help. Looks like I'll be buying some units for Family Relatives - and not forgetting to read instructions for searching carefully,
