Henshaw - yes, this was wife's maiden name and followed down at least eleven generations. However, by the eleventh generation, some were using it cos they liked the sound of it, not because it had ever been in their family! The earliest ref I have to Parnell (Pernil this time) is Pernil, who died in 1533. As for lewd country girls and rough country bumpkins - yep, they have to be mine, don't they! Oh, and one of Parnell's sons, born about 1668, married a ....RATHBONE!!! Think about that Merry, whilst writing your X----Cards, and weep. Olde Crone |

Different names certainly are a bonus. When I find Glirthyria Ann Clyma Salmon I KNOW, and there is no shadow of doubt, that she is mine! Henshaw: A maiden name incorporated into a [grand]child's given name that has gone on to become a family name perchance? Victoria Canberra ACT |

Thankyou Martin, I shall go and look - one of the transcriptions for this name is P'nell, which is what made me think it was short for Petronella. Olde Crone |

It is recorded on the Beyond The Name website as a contracted form of Petronel. This URL will probably get deliberately corrupted by GR but will try anyway. Martin http://www.behindthename[.]com/php/view.php?name=parnel |

Esta Thankyou for that - I searched, but could not find! It is spelled on one occasion as Pernill. It is definitely used as a female name in this family, although I did notice on Ancestry World Tree, that someone has her down as a man! Helpfully, Parnell/Pernill what-have-you, marries her cousin who has the equally splendid name of Henshaw - they have been a dream to trace and have left several enticing Wills. (Guess what I want for Xmas?) Olde Crone |

the only reference I could find to a girls name was this ' The same as Pernell, from Petronilla, Italian, pretty stone. A wanton, immodest girl. ' It's seems to be more of a boys name ! Gender: Boy Pronunciation: par-NEL Origin: Latin Meaning: 'Country bumpkin.' Notes: From Petronius. Also possibly derived from an ancient Roman family name, from the Greek name Petros, meaning 'stone.' Use may be in honor of Charles Parnell, the 19th-century Irish politician who campaigned for home rule in Ireland. Parnel is a surname derived from a medieval given name. See also Pernell. Variants: Parnel, Parrnell |

It runs through six generations, from the 1500s (various spellings) and I am wondering if its short for Petronella? Any ideas anyone? Olde Crone |
