Christine in Herts Report 10 Dec 2005 20:39

Was just reminded that I hadn't looked on the site for a while and there's a great special offer on - especially for Christmas presents! Will put as a reply so it's easier to see.

I've never actually pursued the membership thing - although it looks a good idea. I imagine it's on this page: http://www.archivecdbooks.org/members/ Christine

Cor, thats a bit tempting isnt it. I was tempted to get the Norfolk marriages but see they dont have the likely parishes on there for my missing Ed and Liz Horstead. Will think about it!

I was wondering about the Bucks ones - the CD includes Edlesborough, which is where most of my Bucks lot were (or the ones I know about so far) but not Wingrave (which is what my next digging session will be when I next go to Aylesbury). Christine

No anyone can order the 50% off. If you are a member I believe it means you sponsor the books that are scanned and get discounts etc., for that. Definately worth buying from them. I got the Cambs marriages. I also got a part cd of the 1841 Suffolk census. Worked out at £3.75 for that.

Yikes - that's the last time I read YOUR tips, Christine - this one's just cost me 75 pounds!!! (Or saved me 75 pounds, whichever way you decide to look at it!)> LOL!! Thanks for the info - I'd thought ages ago about getting some, but it's definitely worth it at 50% off, and I have been working REALLY hard this year, so deserve a Christmas pressie for myself. It does say that you can answer other people's requests for help on the internet without breaking copyright agreement, so I guess some others on GR will benefit from my purchases too! I think this company is fabulous to make these old books available so widely. And it only costs the same 2 pounds to get them posted all the way here to NZ - even though I've ordered 10 different CD sets! Thanks again. Sue (in NZ)

Blimey Sue, I bet Christine wishes she was on commission now!

You're right, Heather! Maybe Christine will need a lookup in one of my London resources once they arrive! I feel slightly nervous, but I'm sure it'll arrive ok - just as my certs do when I order them. And when I look at the cost of UK accommodation that I'm somehow going to have to afford when I (hopefully, bird flu permitting!) get over for my big trip next year, it's only about a night or so at a hotel's worth, which I'd have to pay if I were going to get the original resources from somewhere I had to visit. See - I can justify (so wonder why I turned the screen off quickly when husband walked into the room! LOL - a closet spender) anything to myself :-)))) Sue (in NZ)

Check out the net before you book any rooms over here. There is a chain offering £10 a night at the moment for over Christmas!

Wow, Heather - are they in the middle of the motorway or something? Seriously, thanks for that. What's the chain? It's not until late Aug - Oct, but I'm hoping to get some cheaper places when the school hols are over. Can't wait for a British Summer - it'll be my first since 1972! Sue.
