I am trying to find the parents of Thomas Farrand born 1788 he was married on 26 Sep 1815 to Esther Rothwell at Almondbury, Yorkshire. I think it was James Farrand and Sarah Oldfield but have no confirmation or birth dates. |

Suzanne, I doubt you will get birth certs, as it is before 1837 when the civil reg started, only the parish reg info. Have you found him in any later census's, this will help with his approx age. Heather |

Hi Heather Oh, brick wall then! I have a birth certificate from 1800 for a relative with an original purple penny stamp, so I must have been lucky there. Do I have to pay for looking at parish registers? Thanks Sue |

No, I don't think you have to pay but they are held in the parish churches of the area you need. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, wow what a find, 1800 birth cert. Heather |

Suzanne, No, you do not have to pay to look at Parish Registers in the archive office in which they are held. Sometimes the church record you seek is still at the church. On occasions they charge a nominal fee to visit, and look at the original register. Many of the Yorkshire Registers have been published by YPRS (Yorkshire Parish Register Society) and if you subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk I believe that many of these registers are available to search on that site. You asked where else you could look Try a google search Register of One-Name Studies. Thousands of names are registered, and if the surname you seek is listed they may already have found the record you seek. Some of members have on line site, as we do. Try google search X (Surname) One name study. You could also try The National Archives, records on line to search for an old will. We have wills for our surname as far back as 1550. Trade Directories (Kelly's etc) are another useful source. Hope some of this helps. Regards Ray Whincup |

Suzanne, Ancestry have, Almondbury from 1557 - 1598 Almondbury from 1598 - 1652 These dates are too far back to connect with what you need yet but I did spot this for 1651 Feb - Thomas F Michaellis Farrand de Fenay - baptism. Have saved image, I am no expert but I don't mind looking when you need it. Heather |

Suzanne - is that really a birth certificate from 1800, or is it a baptism certificate? We found some baptism certs for my husband's family - with stamps - a few months back. Christine |
