Don't worry - Jane Austen had an aunt accused of stealing ribbon. She and her husband were imprisoned before the trial and if convicted would have been transported. nell |

Don't worry - think I've found his marriege - IGI 25/2/1842 John Peters/Harriet Brown father Michael Brown. Also on BMD Kensington 3/271 Have just ordered thecert!! Have the names Thacker and Brown on two sones birth cetrs, and with Mother Sarah Thacker it gets a bit confusing - hopefully marriage cert will say something useful!! John Peters is an interesting one - he also appears at the Old Bailey - how he got off is beyond me - the excuse for being in possession of a lot of ribbon would, in modern terms be 'it fell off the back of a cart m'lud' Peter |

.having Sarah THACKER - the most likely death would seem to be for a 94 year old one in Mar Q 1866 in Lambeth. Would it be possible for someone to find her in 61 to see if it is the same Sarah?? Peter |

Helen - THANKYOU _ you have just solved a mystery - on Charles's BC his mother's name looks like Stathers - not Thacker!!!!! I've been looking in the wrong place (mind you, Williams BC says 'formerly Brown!!') I have them, without John, on later census. Peter |

That's because Shoreditch is considered as part of London now, and not Middlesex: Shoreditch Created 1st July 1837. In Middlesex until 1889. Sub-districts : Haggerston; Haggerston East; Haggerston West; Holywell; Hoxton New Town; Hoxton Old Town; St. Leonards; Shoreditch North East; Shoreditch North West; Shoreditch South. GRO volumes : II (1837-51); 1c (1852-1930). Shoreditch. Registers now in Hackney district. nell |

I can't find any of the Peters family in 1861. Assuming John died before then, this is a likely one: Name: Peters, John Record Type: Deaths Quarter: March Year: 1858 District: Shoreditch County: London Middlesex Volume: 1c Page: 111 But the age at death isn't given this early on, so its impossible to be certain. Shoreditch would be the right reg district if he died at home. nell |

Deaths are always registered in the registration district where they occurred. This isn't always where the person lived. You don't say where Great Cambridge Street is/was, or when you last heard of this chap. Is this him on 1851 census? John Peters abt 1800 Middlesex, England Head Shoreditch Middlesex Harriet Peters abt 1802 Middlesex, England Wife Shoreditch Middlesex Alfred Peters abt 1834 Middlesex, England Son Shoreditch Middlesex Charles Peters abt 1844 Middlesex, England Son Shoreditch Middlesex William Peters abt 1847 Middlesex, England Son Shoreditch Middlesex Sarah Thacker abt 1775 Middlesex, England Mother Shoreditch Middlesex nell nell |

John Peters (b c 1800) was a braid/ribbon manufacturer in London - last heard of in Great Cambridge Street. He was married to Harriet (possibly Brown) and had three children - Alfred b 1834 Middlesex, Charles 1844 Haggerstone and William 1847 Middlesex. I can't locate a death - which area would the death have bben registered? Peter |
