TinaTheCheshirePussyCat Report 1 Dec 2005 17:24

Oh joy. I’m like a pig in muck here. I have been researching my family tree for about 2 years, almost entirely by computer. However, despite actually doing my children’s tree, so am doing my husband’s family as well as my own, I have now got back on all my lines to the point where I need to get up out of my chair and visit various records offices. This is a lot harder to organise! Yesterday, I got the last of the marriage certificates which I needed – dated 1844. Edward Hill marrying Martha Hill, in the West Midlands. Well, you can imagine how many Hill’s there are and I did not hold out much hope of progressing further with it. In any case, I already knew who Martha’s parents were, she was born in Wednesbury. Edward however was born in London and I had not been able to find a suitable birth on the IGI. But joy, oh joy. Instead of having a father with a stupid name like John or Thomas, he is Isaac, and he is a surgical instrument maker. YES, YES, YES. Found him on the 1851, found him on the IGI, Edward and Martha were cousins, got his marriage (courtesy of Edward actually being Edward Samuel Blakemore Hill – Isaac married Alice Blakemore), got lots and lots and lots of other brothers, sisters, cousins etc to follow through all the censuses. The IGI must have done one of their periodic revisions of the info on the web site and Edward’s christening has magically appeared. And, to top it all, I have a day of work tomorrow, waiting in for the replacement washing machine, so I can spend all day on the computer! Oh, don’t you just love it when something goes well for a change. Tina (getting really into Christmas mode now)

That's fantastic Tina! If you ever need a look up in the East Yorkshire area, give me a shout. It'll save you getting up out of your chair! lol Jeanette x

Oooooh, Jeanette, you may regret saying that! Does Scarborough come under East Yorkshire? I have a marriage in 1809 which used to be on the IGI but has done a disappearing act at present - presumably will reappear in about 6 weeks time. It is between Thomas Brigham and Catherine Ingram (actually, it says Ingran on the IGI but if they are who I think they are, they called their second son Ingram), and was dated 19/4/1809. I would dearly love to have that verified, and especially to know if there is any other information, like witnesses, or what parish they came from, because Thomas was born in Pocklington and Catherine in Sussex (assuming they are the right couple), so what the **** was she doing getting married in Scarborough at the age of 13! Now look what you have done - sent me off on a different track completely! If you do ever go to the right archive I would greatly appreciate a look-up for this. Do you need anyone in Shropshire (it will be after christmas though, I am afraid?) Tina

Tina Scarboro PR's aren't at my local CRO but I do believe they may be at the one in York. I do have to go back there as I didn't finish all that I wanted to do........and I left my folder there the last time I went! lol Like you say though it will be after Christmas now, so if you can wait that long I'll be more than happy to have a look for you. Send me the details again through the site so I have a record of them (I am printerless and email-less til Monday! lol) Just had a thought, I wonder if they have the records for Pocklington too. I could have a look for your Thomas aswell if you like.

Hi Jay I thought they might be. I've only been there once so I wasn't quite sure. Am I right in thinking that they hold the Bishop's Transcripts for the whole of Yorkshire?

Thank you, Jeanette, this is more than kind of you. I will send you everything I know about Thomas. Unfortunately he died in 1856 so I only have him on one census. And there do seem to be millions of Thomas Brighams on the IGI. Well, there were a few weeks ago. Have just had a look and they have all disappeared! Don't you just hate the way they move that information on and off the site - I wonder how long it will be before they all reappear! Anyway, I will message you next week with as much as I know, but I do not want you to waste too much of your time looking things up for me when I am sure you have fish of your own to fry! I hadn't thought of leaving something behind at the Records Office so that you have to go back to collect it. Hmm - what a good idea, must adopt that one! Tina

'fish to fry' LOL Tina, I'm just fortunate my head isn't loose! lol It's no problem whatsoever. I will probably be going with Jan in York so we can do a bit each. Jeanette x
