Another reference:- Attorney (planting attorney): Non-resident proprietors hired someone to whom they gave a 'power of attorney' to manager their properties. This 'attorney' might be a resident proprietor, a merchant, a lawyer, or an old experienced overseer. Anne

I think it is 'scholar at home', i.e. she was home-educated. Kate.

I have found the person I am looking for on the 1851 census. Martha Roberts, born about 1842 in Jamaica. Recorded in Marlow, Herefordshire, as a visitor. I can't read all the details, however! Someone with better eyes then mine may be able to. Anyone care to help out? It would be much appreciated. The details in the occupation column for the whole household might just hold a clue for me.
