could anybody tell where i can find the 1871 census as it seems to have a large chunk missing i have joseph battey on a page he is down as brother his daughter sarah jane as daughter a james hurst as brother in law and 2 niecesthey are emma and mary jane no sister wife or anybody else i would like to find out where he was in 1871 as i sent away for a death certificate and guess what wrong joseph right year of birth but a coal miner instead of a cotton weaver poor man had a piece roof fall on him hope somebody can make sense of this as i am begining to get a headache thanks in advance eileenx |

Yoiur message is very confusing. Have you found him in 1871 or not? If not, which 'page' have you found him on. Where is he likely to be living/where was he born and when? Sam x |

sorry sam i found him on the 1871 census joseph battey born 1821 kendal westmorland relationship brother civil parish glossop derby his daughter sarah jane 2nieces emma and mary jane hurst and a brother in law james hurst there was no head of household mentioned eileen he was probaly living in or near hadfield derbyshire he was a cotton weaver eileen i have just found these 3 on the1881 census george albert hirst 1862 nephew james hirst 1829 brother in law {head] Mary ann hirst 1826 born in kendal westmoreland sister all living at 46 bankbottom glossop dale derby could this be the missing bit of the family eileen |

Joseph Batty abt 1821 Kendal, Westmorland, England Brother Glossop Derbyshire View Record Sarah Jane Batty abt 1860 Glossop, Derbyshire, England Daughter Glossop Derbyshire View Record Emma Hurst abt 1860 Hadfield, Derbyshire, England Niece Glossop Derbyshire View Record James Hurst abt 1829 Burnley, Yorkshire, England Brother-in-law Glossop Derbyshire View Record Mary Jane Hurst abt 1858 Hadfield, Derbyshire, England Niece Glossop Derbyshire 69 Station Road looking Image James is at the top perhaps they both own the house then it goes the 2 nieces then joseph then daughter after that it says married on both perhaps the wives work nights why can't they write in the same order as image? i think who ever wrote image got confused should have put joseph down as B I L jeanette |

jeanette this part of my family has had me confused every other one seems to be called joseph they move allround the place and then end up next door to one another in hadfieldeileenx |

thanks for all your help i have copies of the 1851 1861 census its the 1871 census thats causing all the bother i am going to hibernate and then go up to kendal inthe spring josephs wife came from ireland queens county laois her name was bridget catton i have their marriage certificate it doesnt tell you very much one witness was mary ann battey so probaly she is the mary ann hirst thanks again for your help eileenx |

thanks brenda one more yorkshireman in the family james was born in holm firth my husband is proud of his yorkshire birth but it seems i am the one with the yorkshire blood his family come from norfolk and lincs my dads mum comes from about an hours drive from us near barnsley his grandma from doncaster they still ended up travelling to hadfield i always thought i came from lancs just goes to show you start this mad hobby you dont know where you will end up regards eileenx brenda am i following you around i have just been looking at that census it is most likely her eileenx |

brenda i have just been looking at the1891 census they have bridget down as being 90 she would have been about 72 also wrong part of ireland more confusion i am sorry but i am going tohave to sign off for tonight now i have been sat here to long i am geting cramp in my leg and foot thanks for all your help it is much appreciated eileenx |

hi brenda sorry i havent answered till now been busy the joseph battey death certificate i have isfor 3rd july1872 church town killamarsh he was 52 he was a coal miner the joseph battey i am looking for was a cotton weaver so unless he changed jobs at the last minute he is the wrong one i was in contact with some batteys from sheffield but they seemed to have disappeared joseph is not on the 1881 census so i shall have to look through rest of the family to see if i can find him eileenx |

brenda thanks again i will have a look on the census again and then probaly leave it till after christmas we are going away soon so i have a lot to do and most days we are looking after a very lively 3year old grandaughter i am shattered never mind it will sort itself out many thanks again for your help |
