I have a Francis Kennedy born c1850 in Bermondsey. The first trace I have of him is in February 1869 when he married Clara Habblett. His address is listed as Snowfields, hers as 11 camperdown place. I can find no birth ref and no trace of him in the 1851, 1861 or 1871 census. In all other census however, there is no problems finding him. I even have his death cert - he died in 1912, age listed as 62. So where do I go from here? Any suggestions? The only other thing I know about him is that his fathers name was John. Help much appreciated, Lorraine

Thanks Ted, was his father's name John? I just can't find him anywhere. Bermondsey is sometimes listed under Middlesex and sometimes under Surrey. Lorraine

Hi Jess, Francis' father's occupation was Fellowship Porter and by 1869 when Francis married, he was listed as Deceased on the marriage cert. But his name definately says John, not James. The marriage took place in the parish of Christ Church, Bermondsey, Surrey. Francis' eldest daughter Elizabeth was born in November 1872 and by then they were living at 3 Cundall Place, Bermonsday. I just can't understand why I can't at least find them in 1871 as surely they wouldn't have gone far between 1869 and 1872. However, having said that, on Elizabeth's birth cert, Francis occupation is seaman (merchant Service) and on his marriage cert he is down as Mariner so maybe he was away at sea, but what about his wife? And I doubt he would have been away at sea in 1861 when he would have been about 11, definately not in 1851 when he would have been only a baby. I have been struggling with this one for so long and I was so hopeful that the 1851 census would throw some light but it hasn't at all. Lorraine

I cant believe Bermondsey was down as Middx - its the other side of the Thames! It is usually Surrey. I have to say Im blowed if I can find them. I suppose there is no possibility that they were in a workhouse and just recorded as initials?

Heather, there is a whole area on the South bank, including parts of Bermondsey, where if you search a place within it, comes up as Mddx, Surrey AND Kent on an 'old-maps' search!!! When you click to go to each county refererence in turn the same map comes up...J.
