I have a male russian subject (?) a native of Finland born 08/1894 who at the age of about fourteen (1908) went to live in Australia (state not known) with his uncle. He worked in the goldfields and on ranches and on sailing ships. The boys name was Eero Verner Hemming or (Eric Erickson) (Eerickson). His birth father was known as Augusti Hemming or(Eerickson)born 1873. Not sure if he changed his name to Erickson when he went to Australia. He sailed to Liverpool U.K. around 1917/18 where he met and married his wife Florence. 'Any tips on where he was in Australia during1908 onwards '.. thanks J.J.

Goldfields could be the Western Australian Goldfields around Kalgoorlie WA. I can have a look at my local library to see if he is on any of the local electrol rolls around 1908 and after, the name is unusual so this might make it easier. Flat out at the moment so prob won't be able to look till next week. Julie

Don't know if this will help or hinder but Finnish people always take their MOTHER'S surname at birth and are registered as such officially. Finland's laws mean that a family tree is kept officially. You are not allowed to disinherit your immediate blood relatives and the Stste keeps a very efficient and careful note - this law also applies to children who are the subject of adoption. My friend, who is Finnish, found out at the age of 49 when her nother died, that she had a brother who was brought up by his father. She had to share her late Mother's Estate with this unknown, unmet brother. I cannot begin to imagine how you would conduct any research in Finland, or even if the State Records are available to all and sundry. But if you could, then there is a wealth of recorded information going back for centuries, on the Maternal line of course. Olde Crone

Thanks everyone for the tips. I thought the title would be intriguing, but I can see it might put people off. I will ponder over olde crones suggestion of mothers surname I think there might be something there. I did not know that piece of info, thanks crone. I will also look at Susans site thanks Susan. And yes thank you Julie if you can access electoral roles that would be fabulous. I am grateful to you all.................Jean

If you Google Australian National Archives you will find a website with links to online records for people arriving in Australia pre-1973 along with details of family members who accompanied them. relevant dates and the name/no of the ship or plane they travelled on. There are also links to the online BMD records, which are only available in certain States (and then they are usually pre 1930). Good luck, Teresa

Hi Jolly Jean, Searched the Legislative Assembly Rolls for the towns around here (Goldfields Kalgoorlie Western Australia) and no luck sorry. I searched for any Hemming or Erickson (Eerickson) the only ones I found were a Christina and John Errickson of Broad Arrow near Menzies in 1910 and 1914. So places searched (all in Western Australia)Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Brown Hill, Ivanhoe, Coolgardie, Kanowna, Menzies, Hannans. All Goldfields towns or mines. Well at least you know he wasn't around here so narrows down your seach by one area. Good luck with your search Julie
