Thats fine Christine, very pleased to have helped - I get my fair share of help off others on here. Sorry, I was thinking ww1 for the dads army records!. Go to National Archives on line site and you can see what records are available. Click on family history then military.

Wow! I am amazed at what you are all finding, and very impressed. Thank you. It would make sense with the family names too, since Caroline Rouse had a daughter named Alice Eliza, although she later changed it to Alice Mary. With a sister named Eliza it does look quite possible the Mary Rouse is actually my Caroline. Does anyone have any advice if I wanted to go to Kew. I have never been there. Should I look up anything online first. Is it difficult to find documents?

Looks like they are right ones - I cant make out why three kids would be on their own in a barracks, but may be orphaned kids were kept with the regiment rather than send them to an orphanage. As Brenda said, I would defo look on the NA to see if you can find dads details. I just looked on records office someone was looking for a Thomas Doody, gun engraver back in August.

Those three girls are described as ''children of a deceased soldier''. They're also next in the list to ''Thomas DOODY'' - and I'm sure someone here was researching him! Christine

Caroline might be difficult to trace, but Archibald should be easier. If his soldier's documents survive (held at the National Archives, Kew) they should include addresses and next of kin. It is possible - I have certainly found this - that the whole family may have been abroad at the time of the census.

I have a Caroline Rouse in my tree. I think I found the right Caroline in the 1901 census as a visitor to a Taylor household in Marylebone. She is listed as being 28, a maid, born in dover in Kent with a 6 year old daughter Alice. She married in 1914 (as Caroine Elizabeth) and her father is listed as Archibald Rouse (deceased), a private in the rifle brigade. I can't find a Caroline Rouse in free BMD that matches her birth. I also wonder if she appears in any earlier census with her father. I haven't found her before 1901. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Christine
