If you have the details you can always email the local records office and ask them for a photocopy of the original entry - usually a couple of quid. |

Even if an IGI entry is transcribed correctly and are extracted from a parish register (I'm sure the greater percentage are pretty accurate)..... It's still worth seeing the original entry as it may give useful additional info....such as occupations, signatures, witnesses etc etc. Might make all the difference in the world! Also if you see the parish register (on film or whatever) you will pick up other info like burials (which are few and far between on the IGI) and other interesting things like the parishioner who was struck by lightening, or the occurance of a smallpox epidemic, etc etc......brings the whole thing to life! merry |

Thanks for the reply Sam and Alan. Lots of travelling I think, none of my family were born anywhere where I am now! :-) Jean |

Yes definately you should check them. If they were submitted by members of the LDS church, then they are often wrong. Even if they are extractions from the actual parish records, they still contain errors. For example, there is a marriage on there for George Mansfield and Sarah Bonnes in Burslem Staffordshire in 1823. I had Sarah in my tree for ages before I got round to checking the actual parish records where I discovered that she is actually Sarah Bourne! Sam x |

Thanks Pippa. Most were found on family search. Do I need to confirm with the parish records? |

You don't. The only information available are Parish Records and some are put on familysearch.org but only a small fraction. Pippa |
