I suppose that with more recent deaths, hopefully there might be a death notice in the local paper which would list the 'in-between' surnames too? Not official, though. Sue (in NZ) |

Johnathan - I agree! and the problem with death certs is that they are dependent on the informant to get the details right. So if someone can't remember whether Gt grannie's maiden name 2 marriages ago was Hills or Mills, it's a genealogist's nightmare! My grandfather's death was registered by my uncle. He gave his date of birth out by a year and the birthplace was mispelt. I inquired about getting it changed, but its a tremendous fag and I couldn't be bothered. At least I've got it recorded correctly in my tree. nell |

Joy said Q2 1969 and that IS correct!! Janet's comment about last known name and maiden surname is a very important one!!!! Generally any ''in between'' surnames will not appear on the death cert. Merry |

My Nan's has her last known name and her maiden name. It's like her marriage to my grandfather didn't exist. (You can guess how annoyed I was at this) |

A woman who has been married more than once will only have her maiden name on the certificate and not her previous married names. At least that's what I've found on mine. Kath. x |

My apologies - I've just checked on some of my recent certs. Maiden name is there. Not sure what they do with multiply-married women! nell |

Maiden names are not on death certificates. From ONS site: 'Details contained on a death certificate include: name, date and place of death date and place of birth (please note: before 1969 a certificate only showed the age of the deceased) occupation and usual address cause of death the person who gave the information for the death registration ' nell |

Anne I think they started adding the Maiden Name around the June Quarter of 1969, but not absolutely sure. Can't find my info book at the minute. Joy |

Dur. I didn't know you COULD get maiden names on death certificates. None on mine, up to the 1930s. I suspect it probably changed when they started putting date of birth in the death indexes. |

Can anyone tell me when they started adding maiden names to death certificates? was it as early as 1903? |
