Just makes it a lot easier to do the search. You can look up the Batch number for a particular church then enter it in the IGI search form but with his site you can look up the Batch number and then have it sent straight to the IGi search form. Often with a rural area you will quickly find a whole family. If you download all the names into a GEDCOM then import that into your family tree program. I can then merge some of the data with existing entries and leave others in case they are needed in the future as I get more information. MB

Helen, I just google Hugh Wallis IGI index and go in that way. Then click on county, then place. You will see a list of all parish register extractions and their batch numbers - click on the one you want and off you go! Jay

For Claire Sorry about that! Just to reinforce - if you put in Smith, then John & Mary as parents, you will only get Smith children which vicar has recorded as s/o or d/o Jn & Mary Smith. It won’t show any of the children of John Smith, or of John and (Mary) Ann Smith. ( We all know the problems of mothers having two forenames and husbands having two wives!) The further back you go in PR, the scarcer the detail, so don’t narrow the field TOO much! Have fun! Jay

Claire, I call up the parish baptisms and then enter surname only. You can also put in parents names to narrow it down further, but some of the earlier events only have father's name, so if you put both names, it can't match your search. Most of my rellies were ag labs & lived in small villages, sometimes I just enter a surname to see if anything happened there. One advantage of Hugh Wallis over LDS is that if you want to find someone in a specific parish you don't have to wade through pages of people with the same name but different parishes. It's also very useful with the London parishes as you can do each church. nell

If you find a relative in a baptism record for example, scroll down and click on the CO batch number. It will take you to a new screen - fill in parents' names and the country & county boxes and click search and it will then bring up all the parish entries with those parents. nell

Find it useful for looking for siblings if you only know the name of one child. Also narrows the field if you want to look at a specific parish, but if I'm doing a general search, I don't use it, can't think that it would help.

Hi Heather Don't quite know how it works, but there have been occasions when I've found something on Hugh Wallis that didn't come up on a general LDS search!!!!!!! I usually try and have a look on both if it doesn't come up first time. Regards Looby

Im sure Im being thick here, but how does this site have any advantage over just using the LDS site for searches direct please? If I enter a marriage and it comes up zilch on the LDS site then surely I would get the same results going through the parishes one by one?
