Has anybody already had a look at the War diaries (WWI) that the National Archives has made available online? There are loads, but they are in the 'Other Documents' section, rather than the 'Family History' one, so I didn't know they were there till I saw them mentioned in a magazine. Does anybody have any tips on how to make best use of them, how to find the one(s) you want, etc.? Kate. |

Have you played with the site at all? They've actually got some soldiers discharge papers on there too! |

How do you find the soldiers' discharge papers, Abbess? Kate. |

The route I went in by (clicking on other records and choosing military) only allowed me to sort by date, so I went to the drop down menu and looked at various dates. It just appears to be the letter S in the 1840s, but it must be an indication of the way things are going to go. It's funny, I said that WO97 would be a prime candidate for digitisation to a friend of mine, who pooh-poohed it. |

Right, I see, so on the 'Advanced Search' you just select 'Military & Defence' and in the 'other keywords' if you type 'soldiers service documents' you will get them all, but if you put the name in too you will just get that person's. Wow, I hope there are more of those to come! Anyway, it looks as though it could be expensive looking through a few of those war diaries and as my relly was in at least 4 different regiments / corps and I don't know what date he was in each, I don't think I'll bother at the moment. But those soldiers' service documents... they look as if they could be really interesting. I can't see the logic in putting them in 'Other Documents' instead of 'Family History' as with medal index cards, Royal Navy records and the like, can you? Kate. |

The site is going to be completely revamped fairly soon, so that instead of going to Documents Online, or census, or E179 or the Catalogue, you do a single search. They've probably just shoved the info in there, rather than design or expand the family history section as they know it will all shortly change. |

Just found the bit this thread refers to, myself. My grandfather was in 9 battalion yorkshire regiment so I found the set of his Regimental War Diaries by putting just ''9 battalion yorkshire regiment'', with inverted commas around it, in the search box. It seems to be batched by the month, at £3.50 per batch. As it happens, I'd already got what I wanted direct from a museum (for a fee/donation), but it would cost me at least 4 lots of £3.50 to get the set covering his time before being invalided out.
