Thanks Tracy for that; I'll take a look.

I've found it very useful. With births, if I hadn't noticed a string of familiar forenames with the surname I was researching, I would still be assuming my grandad was the eldest sibling, born after 1910, not the youngest. With just that little bit of extra info I broke a three year brick wall - and gained a whole collection of GR contacts. It has gaps, but it is a great starting point.

I think this might be him.... Births Dec 1848 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- MARKHAM Male Brackley 15 208 I think the page number is wrong though. It /might/ be 205.

Janet, Well said. Yes it is free because people volunteer to do the transcriptions. Brilliant site and do have a lot of luck with finding information. Maureen

I find it really useful as a starter and it’s FREE. Much easier than going to the library and trolling through the fiche. And if you get a marriage hit, gives you possible partners, which the original index doesn’t do, for the 1800’s. Yes, there are still lots of gaps because it isn’t complete, but I can search from home. I am just so grateful to all the transcribers who have given up their time to do this. Jay

His death might not be on there as he may have lived past 60.

I must be doing something wrong. Found what I need from other sites eventually, but the info is never on free BMD! Trying to find Edwin Markham's birth in Newbottle, Northants or even his death which I presume was Ufton, Warks, as he lived there for yrs and was there on 1901 census. Got him on 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 census with his numerous children but not as a child. Can't find birth entry but according to census it'd be 1848 or 1849. Seems odd. * Sorry, entered this message before I read replies to my original. Its a bit clearer now thanks!

If you look on their home page, and click on 'A breakdown by event and year can be viewed here', you will see charts of their current coverage. If you are searching for, say 1920, you will be very unlikely to find what you're looking for. If you are searching somewhere around 1870 to 1910 it should most likely be on there. Can you put up a few examples of your searches and we can suggest what the problem might be? Kate.

I always (almost) get what I need from there. What are you looking for?
