I just tried to order a death cert and although I know all the details such as page volumne quarter etc it kept coming back with I need to fill in date of death this man died in 1953 age 53 so he isnt under the age they seem to want more details with normally . going out now back later

It usually asks for this if you haven't clicked 'yes' next to where it asks if the GRO reference is known. Sam x

Are you sure you ticked the box asking if you had the GRO ref? It says ''NO'' unless you change it to yes, perhaps you forgot, in which case you would be asked for the date of the event Sam

Only the Forename and Surname should be mandatory, as long as you have the GRO reference. If you don't, that will be why it's asking for the date.

I seem to remember that you do have to add full details for a 'recent' death but I thought it was in the last 50 years.

I wasn't able to get a death cert as I didn't have the exact date of death and was told that's cos it's in the last 75yrs!

I have had no problems obtaining death certificates at all. As for entering the age of death if you have said yes to the GRO reference and the age at death is quoted on the BMD then you are expected to know that and give that as well Regards Sue

I have cheated in the past when ordering a Death Cert. Where it asks for a date of death .... put in any date within that quarter. I usually put 1st of the month. If you do it this way, you MUST make sure that you add on the applications ...'DO NOT KNOW EXACT DATE OF DEATH' ... there is a facility somewhere to add more details etc... it's such a long time since I ordered a death I can't remember exactly.

sorry I am late repying to all you lovely people but had to look willing and do some housework ,I think I ticked the box saying I knew the reference but maybe I didnt .I had this trouble before and was told it was because it was less than 50 years ago and the person was under 50 but this man would have been 53 and it was 52 years ago so was surprised. will try to order it again thanks so much for all your replies and I must say thats a good idea make a date up I might try that in the future

They won't let you apply online for a death in the last 50 yrs without death date known - but you can ring up and apply over the telephone. I've done this. Jacquie
