Clerkenwell - what county please?

Richard in Perth Report 22 Oct 2005 08:05

Actually London became a county in its own right in 1889. The County of London incorporated much of Middlesex, as well as parts of Kent and Surrey, in addition to the old City of London (the ''square mile''). It did not become Greater London until 1963, when it was expanded to include the remainder of Middlesex as well as parts of Essex & Herts. Clerkenwell became part of the County of London in 1889. Before then it was in Middlesex. It was never in Surrey - as mentioned above, Surrey was south of the river, whilst Middlesex was north. Nor was it ever part of the City of London. Richard

And to show how everything is related, my husband's grandfather was born in Stepney, and later ran a pub in Pakenham Street, a stone's throw from the Family Records Centre in Islington. nell

Clerkenwell was Middlesex before it was eaten up in Greater London. The City of London was and is the square mile. It is confusing though as different sites class Clerkenwell as London or Middlesex. Surrey and Kent are south of the Thames, north is generally Middlesex and Essex. nell

I actually find the old London (Middlesex, Surrey etc) confusing, I much prefer my rellies to be in the little villages in the sticks! Yes I think City of London was the 'square mile'. Angela
