Bit long winded, sorry, but want to give all the facts I have....I know I have the right people despite the inconsistencies in spelling! UPDATE: Ellen Heywood Sep 1841 Ashton under Lyne. Right time frame, right reg district and not an unlikely mistranscription of the surname. Will give this one a shot and see where it gets me! |

James HEROD married Emma Johnson 27 Feb 1842 in Oldham, Lancashire (marriage cert mistranscribed as HERD). James is a Widower, Emma is a Spinster. 1841 census, living in Dukinfield, Cheshire, James, 25, Ellen 30, Margaret 5. Transcribed as HEYROD. I cannot find a marriage for them. Margaret Herrod baptised St Michaels, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, 13 Mar 1836 to James and HELEN. It looks like the daughter died Mar qtr 1847, I've sent off for her death cert. So in order to marry Emma, Ellen/Helen must have died between the 1841 census and 27th Feb 1842. I can't find her death. Freebmd/ancestry bmd have nothing and there's nothing listed on NBI. I've searched the burial records for St Michaels (which was the only church for Ashton/Dukinfield during that time frame) under Herod/Herrod/Heyrod and Ellen/Helen combinations and found nothing but although the 1841 states born in county, Lancashire is a big place and she could have been buried anywhere. Any bright ideas most welcome! Lou |

Have you tried on FreeBDM, with just a christian name,Helen/Ellen, year span and just registration distric?????to see how many it brings up in that area you then might be able to see if the Christian name was mi---stranscribed , kay. Cheshire iwill be either -X1X or -8a. |

Hi Kay Yep, I've tried that....I've even tried it for the UK as a whole in case she died outside Lancashire/Cheshire but there are none that fit into the 'window' between the census and James's 2nd marriage Lou |

Hi Peter No...I can't buy credits for 1837online as they don't accept the card I have but I've looked through the GRO indexes at the record office and couldn't see anything obvious Lou |

Star! So no Herod/Herrod's then???? Ok...if this one isn't her, he either buried her under the patio so he could marry Emma or he/she upped and left and he remarried claiming to be a widower. Will get the death cert before I start thinking bigamous marriages and looking for one for her! Thanks a lot Lou |

That's brilliant, hon, thank you so much. The 1842 Margaret is also worth looking into for the death of the daughter....she's certainly not around by the 1851 census and James was transcribed as Herd on his marriage cert that same year, which is a coincidence not to be ignored. And Elizabeth will fit in somewhere so will note that one too. Very grateful Lou |
