Oh sorry, I realise what you meant now....she must have died after 1969 for her maiden name to be on the cert. (So no, your nan wasn't being think - she was being helpful, saving you a load of time and money!) So, how old was Harriet when she died and what was the date of the cert? Also, who regisitered the death? Merry

well i've been on the phone to my nan and she says that her death certificate says Harriet's maiden name was Fuller. So I presume this was her ACTUAL maiden name, and not her name from her first marriage. I didn't know death certificates had maiden names on it? Is my nan being thick?

I take it you don't have your granddad's birth cert then? (that should have her maiden name on it.....) Oh, must dash....my Chinese is here (meal not man!) Merry

You haven't said when she died or the age on the cert..... Can you explain further about how many times she was married ..... I don't understand why she might have died with her maiden name if she had been married? Merry

I need help guys! We found a death certificate and her name was Fuller at the time of death, so this could be her maiden name or her name from her first Marriage. I'm completly stuck, dont know what to do!

does your mother know her mothers maiden name? It will be on her own birth cert - that is an easy wy to find out even if you have to buy your mothers birth certificate

Paul, You will certainly need a surname for her ... howabout getting grandparents marriage cert first? Maybe another family member has it stored away somewhere?? Then, you can begin ... My experience has been with the National Childrens Homes - go look for the website and try contacting them from there. They have a system of checking and retrieving files. However, you may not be able to see the whole file - my Gt Uncle's file was copied to me in part only ... but for family history purposes this was enough to tell me who had brought him to the orphanage and something about the contacts he maintained with family members whilst a resident. Good luck, Jane

I'm trying to find my great nan in the 1901 Census, I don't have a maiden name for her, just a first name, Harriet. I think at the time of the 1901 Census she was in an Orphanage in Brixton. Does anyone know how to find these records? Thanks, Paul.
