Sometimes the birth was re----registered later even many years later in the new name if the couple married but the original will still be in the GRO Indexes,,,,,so you get it in both surnames... Val.....They may have appeared or the mother gave it to understand she was a married woman at the time, of registration ,,,you needed no proof then of your being wed.. Kay..

I only have one instance of this in my tree (guess most unmarried fathers couldn't be persuaded to the Reg Office!!???). Ther one I have, the child appears in the GRO indexes twice - under the mother's surname and also under the father's surname. Can't remember the year offhand, but I think it was about 1845. Merry

Yes it was ,if they intended to marry at a later date,,,,but not always. As the child could be given the surname name of the father if he agreed and was present ,,,, but the mother would still be shown as a single woman,,,,,,,,,,,there will be no formaly on cert. kay.

I know that if unmarried parents go to register the birth of the child together, then the child can be registered in the surname of the father. Does anyone know if this was the case in 1905? Many Thanks Helen x
